Breaking down the world of Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids! Thanks to the cannabis plant we have these awesome little compounds to enjoy. They interact with our Endocannabinoids system, which is considered to be responsible for many significant functions in the brain and body. The cannabis plant itself has over 44 chemical entities, and more than 60 of them are considered to be cannabinoid compounds. The endocannabinoid system works with two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2. The first, CB1, resides in the peripheral and central nervous systems as well as in the brain. When activated they emit dopamine, glutamate and serotonin. The second, CB2, is found in the gastrointestinal and immune systems and, when activated, can help to promote overall good health and homeostasis. The cannabinoid compounds mainly used for commercial products are CBD, THC, THCv, CBG and CBN. They all act differently when consumed or used topically and depending on your needs you will want to find which one(s) work best.

Let's take a look at what each compound is all about:

  • CBD: A non-psychoactive compound that comes from the hemp plant. Mainly used to promote relaxation, reduce nervousness, improve sleep and ease discomfort. Also to note is that CBD comes in a few different types (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate) which you can learn all about by clicking here
  • THC: Notoriously known for its presents in marijuana, this compound can produce psychoactive effects and easily binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors which influence many of the bodies functions.
  • THCv: Very similar to THC but it blocks rather than binds to the CB1 receptors. When used it can help decrease appetite, regulate the circulatory system and reduce nervousness.
  • CBG: Naturally produced in its acidic form, CBGA, is the cannabinoid mother of many types of cannabinoids including CBD and THC. It has almost nonexistent psychoactive effects. CBG is known for relieving aches and pains, aiding in skin health and regulating appetite.
  • CBN: As THC ages it converts to CBN. It is psychoactive but at a much lower rate than THC. CBN is great for aiding sleep, helping with joint discomfort or relieving build up tension.

Cannabinoids can be used to assist in your overall health and wellness or as needed for pain, sleep, aches or other aliments. Many come in a variety of form including tinctures, body care products, drinks, edibles and more.
